Putting in a Sub-Zero air filter takes a few minutes and no tools. Open the fresh-food door, find the air purification housing high on the back wall (lift out the top shelf if it is in the way), open its cover, slide the spent cartridge out and press the new one in until it sits flush. Close the cover, then clear the reminder on the control panel. The cartridge to order is 7042798, due about once a year. No video is needed; the notes below also cover what a clip tends to skip. ## One cartridge fits every Sub-Zero that has one Sub-Zero uses a single air purification cartridge across its range: part 7042798, a direct replacement for the older 7007067. It fits any model built with the air purification system and is the only air filter the refrigerator has, so there is no second pad to hunt for. If the fresh-food section has no purifier housing at all, your model was built without the feature. ## Installing the cartridge, step by step - Unwrap the new cartridge and keep its box, because the old one goes home in it. - Open the fresh-food door and look up at the back wall. On many Classic units the housing sits toward the right. Take the top shelf out if it blocks the cover. - Open the cover. Depending on the model it slides or swings; if it resists, find the release tab rather than prying at the plastic. - Pull the old cartridge straight out, holding it by the body. There is a lamp inside, so do not drop it. - Press the new cartridge into the same spot until it seats flush and the cover closes without force. - Shut the cover, return the shelf, and clear the reminder. ## Clearing the reminder On Classic (CL) and Designer (DET, DEC) touch controls, the panel shows Snooze/Refresh when either the water filter or the air cartridge is due. Snooze buys you 24 hours if the new part has not arrived. Choose Refresh only once the fresh cartridge is in; the countdown then restarts and runs for roughly a year. That matches the cartridge itself, which lasts about one year and scrubs ethylene and odors from the cabinet air every 20 minutes, using technology Sub-Zero says grew out of NASA research. Ethylene is the gas ripening fruit gives off, and it hurries the wilting of nearby greens, so an overdue cartridge often shows itself first in the crisper. ## The old cartridge is not kitchen trash Each cartridge holds a small mercury lamp, so it has to be disposed of under local disposal laws. Tape the spent one inside the new cartridge’s box and take it to a household hazardous waste drop-off, not the curbside bin. ## The water filter is a separate job Plenty of owners searching for the air filter really mean the water filter, which feeds the ice maker and dispenser. On BI, CL, DET and DEC refrigerators and the 648PRO, PRO3650 and PRO4850, the usual cartridge is the twist-in 4204490, interchangeable with 9030868. Classic (CL) and Designer (DET, DEC) filters are rated for 750 gallons (2,839 L) or twelve months; change one sooner if the indicator lights, the flow weakens or cubes come out hollow. Afterward, models without a dispenser should throw out the first two full bins of ice, and dispenser models should run water for two minutes. Older Classic (BI) units may carry a two-prong push-in filter instead. The microbiological 7023811 is discontinued; 7045454 replaces it and treats color, taste and odor only. The UC-15I ice maker uses 7042803 (formerly 7012333), changed every six months, after a long shutdown, or when the red REPLACE FILTER light appears; then hold CLEAN for 6 seconds to reset it. ## The condenser is not a filter Some people call the condenser coil an air filter because it gathers dust like one. It takes no cartridge, just a vacuuming once or twice a year, and a household with shedding pets should do it more often. On a Classic (CL) it sits behind the flip-up grille; on a Designer (DET, DEC), behind the kickplate held by two screws. Switch the unit off at the control panel, wear gloves, and draw a soft brush along the fins so they stay straight. Sub-Zero does not recommend chemical coil sprays. ## When a fresh filter does not fix it If a new water filter, a proper reset and the discarded first ice still leave thin cubes or a weak stream, the restriction probably lies upstream, in the water valve, the supply line or the [ice maker](https://subzerorepairflemingisland.com/service/ice-maker-repair/) itself.
