A built-in refrigerator is joinery as much as it is an appliance, and the kitchen around it is part of the machine. Half of what makes a service call go smoothly or badly is decided years earlier, by whoever framed the opening and whoever laid the floor. ## The three measurements that matter Width of the opening. A built-in needs clearance on both sides, and the panel or trim has to cover the gap. Openings that were cut a fraction tight get lived with, because the unit went in once and nobody has needed it out since. The consequence surfaces on the day it has to come out. Height to the underside of the counter or the header. This is the one that changes after the fact. A new floor laid over an old one takes half an inch or more from the bottom of the opening. Tile over vinyl is the usual culprit in Clay County remodels. The appliance still fits, because it was already in, but its rollers no longer have room to travel and the unit cannot be walked out without lifting. Depth and what is behind it. The water line, the outlet and whatever the previous technician left coiled behind the unit all live in that space. A supply line crimped when the unit was pushed back a few inches too far is one of the most common causes of an ice maker that stopped for no apparent reason. ## Air, and the invisible remodel A built-in rejects its heat through a condenser behind the upper grille. An integrated column hides that path behind cabinetry entirely. Either way, the air has to have somewhere to come from and somewhere to go. Kitchens change. A cabinet return added above the appliance run during a remodel, a decorative panel closing off the top of a column installation, a new crown moulding, a floor that now runs under the toe kick — each of these can halve the available path without anybody involved realising they touched the refrigerator. The symptom is unspectacular and it arrives slowly: longer run times, a degree or two of drift on hot afternoons, and a unit described as having gradually got worse. Nothing has failed. The room changed. ## Getting a unit out of the room Pulling a full-height built-in out on its rollers is the riskiest part of most service visits, and it is the part we plan first. The route matters as much as the opening. A stone threshold at a doorway, a step down into a family room, a turn tight enough that a door has to come off its hinges, a wood floor that will mark under the load. On the older river lots at Hibernia, where houses were built one at a time and no two kitchens match, this is genuinely different at every address. In Eagle Harbor, where a limited number of plans were used, it is usually predictable. Before anything is disconnected, we want to know where the unit is going to stand while it is worked on, what it crosses to get there, and whether the panel comes off first. Ten minutes of measuring beats an afternoon of damage. ## Retrofits and the older housing stock A large part of Orange Park and the older streets of Clay County predates built-in refrigeration. Where a built-in exists in one of those kitchens, it went in during a remodel, and retrofits carry their own findings. The electrical is the recurring one. An older kitchen may never have had a dedicated circuit for the refrigerator, and a built-in sharing a circuit with a countertop load produces intermittent symptoms that look exactly like a failing control board. We measure the supply voltage under load before condemning anything. The other is the opening itself. Cabinetry cut to fit a specific unit years ago will not necessarily accept its successor, and that is a conversation to have before an appliance is bought, not after it is delivered. ## What this means if you are remodelling If you are about to redo a kitchen around an existing built-in, three things are worth insisting on. Keep the finished floor out of the opening so the unit can still roll. Leave the air path as the installer left it, or ask before closing anything above the appliance. And keep the water line accessible rather than sealing it behind new cabinetry. None of that costs anything at the time. All of it costs money later.
