Hibernia: long drives, big kitchens, and one visit that has to carry the parts.

Hibernia Plantation

## On the ground

Hibernia is the old end of Fleming Island. Oak canopy, deep lots, genuine
frontage on the St. Johns, and houses that were built one at a time by different
people over a long stretch of years rather than in a phase by one builder. Our
company takes its name from this stretch of the island, and it is also the part
of our service area where the fewest assumptions survive contact with the
kitchen.

## Nothing here is standard

In a master-planned neighbourhood we can predict the cabinet opening before we
arrive. Out here we cannot. Openings vary in width, in height and in how square
they actually are; some built-ins were retrofitted into cabinetry that predates
them; toe kicks have been rebuilt; floors have been replaced over floors. More
than once we have found that the only way a unit ever went in was before a
counter run was finished, which is a thing worth knowing before, not during, a
service call.

So the first part of a Hibernia visit is measurement. Opening width, height to
the underside of the counter, door swing against whatever is opposite, and the
route from the kitchen to somewhere the unit can safely sit while it is worked
on. We would rather spend ten minutes on that than damage a floor.

## The canopy is a condenser problem

The oaks are the best thing about these lots and they are hard on refrigeration.
Not directly — nobody’s condenser is outdoors — but through what they put into
the air. Pollen in spring, leaf litter and dust year-round, and in houses with
the doors and porches open in the shoulder seasons, a lot of it ends up drawn
into the grille and settled on the condenser coil.

A choked coil does not announce itself. The unit simply runs longer, holds a
degree warmer on hot days, and eventually is described as having slowly got
worse over a couple of years. On a river lot under canopy, we treat condenser
cleaning as a scheduled maintenance item rather than a repair, and it changes
how often it needs doing.

## Power under trees

Canopy and overhead lines together mean more outages and more of the brief,
ugly interruptions that are worse for electronics than a clean loss of power.
Northeast Florida already sees something in the order of sixty-eight
thunderstorm days a year. Out here, add limbs.

The symptom is a unit that has gone blank, unresponsive, or will not restart the
compressor after the lights came back. That is frequently a control or a start
component rather than the compressor itself, which is a much smaller repair, and
it is the first thing we rule in or out. Surge protection on a refrigeration
circuit is worth doing on a river lot under oaks.

## Older cabinets and the parts question

Because the houses out here are of different ages, so are the appliances, and
the first thing we want from a Hibernia call is the model and serial number off
the data plate — usually inside the fresh-food compartment near the top, or
behind the grille. On these cabinets it is not a formality. Components were
revised during production runs, and two units that look identical in the kitchen
can take different fans, different door closers or a different board depending
on where the serial falls.

What that changes in practice is honesty about time. Common wear items for these
platforms — gaskets, fans, thermistors, hinge and closer hardware — are
generally stocked and often fitted the same day. Serial-specific components and
some older boards are ordered, and a superseded board can arrive with a
different connector or a different revision that needs setting up on site. We
give you the expected date in writing rather than a guess on the doorstep.

There is also a limit worth stating. Where a part for an early platform has
genuinely run out, no independent shop can conjure it, and we will tell you that
on the phone rather than sell you a diagnostic that cannot end in a repair.

## Access and timing

Long driveways, gravel in places, and gates on some properties. None of that is
a problem if we know about it. We work weekdays from eight and Saturday
mornings, the diagnostic is a flat fee credited toward the repair, and you get a
written estimate before any part is ordered. Genuine OEM parts, 90 days on
labour and 365 days on parts, from an independent shop that works Sub-Zero
refrigeration only.

★★★★☆

Column was frosting only along the bottom two baskets. He found the fan running slow rather than not at all, which explained why the top half looked normal, and fitted a new motor.

★★★★★

Condenser was solid with dust from a remodel. He cleaned it, rechecked the current the fan was drawing, and was honest that with the cabinet boxed in this tightly it will need doing again before long.

Vance P.2026-02-01

★★★★☆

Machine ran but produced almost nothing. He checked the compartment temperature first, found it several degrees above the point where production becomes unreliable, and fixed that instead.
