Repair or replace

# Is a Sub-Zero worth repairing?

The question every call eventually arrives at. It has an arithmetic answer, and both halves of it are already published on this site — so here they are beside each other.

- Everyday repairs $250–$650 Fans, defrost parts, water valves, door seals.
- Sealed-system work $870–$2,460 The dearest line in the book.
- A comparable built-in $11,600–$16,800 Appliance only, before panels or installation.
- Flat diagnostic visit $80 Credited toward the repair.

The rule

## What the fifty per cent rule actually asks

The rule is a rule of thumb rather than a law: if a repair costs more than half
of replacing the appliance, replace it. It is sound, and it was written with
ordinary appliances in mind — machines where the repair and the replacement are
close enough in price that the comparison is genuinely tight.

A built-in is not that machine, and the arithmetic shows it. Half of a
like-for-like replacement is $5,800 at the bottom of that
range — for the appliance alone, before delivery, installation or panels. The
dearest repair on this site is $870–$2,460. There is no line in the book
that reaches the halfway mark, and on the cheapest comparable replacement the
top of the sealed-system band is about 21 per cent of it. An everyday
repair is nearer 6 per cent.

So the rule, applied honestly to this kind of cabinet, almost always says
repair. That is not a sales line — it is what happens when you put the two
published numbers on the same page. What the rule cannot see, and what actually
decides the difficult cases, is the condition of the box the parts go into.

Price bands

## One side of the scale: the repair

Completed repairs, parts and labour together, in the same bands every other page on this site quotes. The diagnostic visit comes off whichever line the job lands on.

Completed repairs, parts and labour together. The diagnostic visit is credited toward whichever line the job lands on.
| Work| Typical range
| $80 diagnostic visit| $80
| Door gasket or seal replacement| $250–$650
| Evaporator or condenser fan motor| $250–$600
| Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor| $260–$630
| Ice maker, water valve or supply line| $250–$620
| Electronic control board| $420–$840
| Compressor or sealed-system repair| $870–$2,460

Ranges, not quotes: the firm figure is written down after the diagnosis and nothing
is ordered or billed until you have approved it. On this page the work we describe
runs from $80 for the visit to about $2,460 at the top
of the band above. [The whole book of bands is on the pricing page](https://subzerorepairflemingisland.com/pricing/).

The other side

## What replacing it costs instead

A comparable built-in refrigerator, appliance only — before delivery, installation, custom panels or cabinetry. Undercounter and wine units sit below this band; replacing a column pair is usually two purchases rather than one. Appliance pricing is national, unlike the labour above.
| Replacing rather than repairing| Typical range
| Typical 36-42 inch built-in, the usual repair-or-replace comparison| $11,600–$16,800
| Custom panels and integrated cabinetry, on top of the appliance| $2,000–$5,000
| Replacement wine storage or an undercounter unit, appliance only| $3,500–$5,500
| The whole span, appliance only| $8,600–$19,400

Appliance pricing is national; the labour above is this market's. Neither table
is a quote — the figure for your cabinet is written down after the diagnosis,
and if the two sides of this page come out close, you get both numbers rather
than one.

Three answers

## Where a real cabinet lands

-

### Clearly worth repairing

A sound box with one component failed. A fan motor at $250–$600, a
defrost heater, thermostat or sensor at $260–$630, a door seal at
$250–$650, an ice maker or water valve at $250–$620. Against a
replacement that starts at $11,600, none of these is a
decision — it is a repair, and there is nothing to weigh.

-

### A judgement call

Sealed-system work, at $870–$2,460, on a cabinet that is getting on.
Still well under half of replacement, so the rule says repair — but this is
where the box matters. We look at the liner, the doors and hinges, the
interior fittings, and whether parts are still made against your serial. On
a sound cabinet, fitting a compressor buys years at a fraction of the
$11,600 a replacement starts at. On a tired one it only
postpones the same decision.

-

### Not worth doing

A cracked or delaminated liner. A frame corroded through where it meets the
floor. Water damage in the base from a leak that ran for months. A part
that is genuinely no longer made for that serial and has no supersession.
These are the cases where we say so, in writing, and the visit is what it
cost to find out rather than the start of a bill.

Two more things that are not in either table. A built-in runs two sealed
systems, so a fault on one side is not evidence about the other — the cabinet
is rarely as far gone as one warm compartment suggests. And replacement is not
only the appliance: a custom-panelled opening adds
$2,000 to $5,000
on top, and the cabinetry around a discontinued width may not accept a current
one without joinery work.

Asked and answered

## What people ask before they decide

- What is the 50 per cent rule for appliance repair?: A rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than half of replacing the appliance, replace it instead. It was written for ordinary appliances. Against a comparable built-in at $11,600 to $16,800 for the appliance alone, half is a figure no line in our book comes close to.

- Is it worth fixing a Sub-Zero refrigerator?: Usually, and it is arithmetic rather than loyalty. Even sealed-system work at $870–$2,460 is a fraction of what a comparable built-in costs to replace, before panels or installation are counted. What changes the answer is the cabinet itself: a cracked liner is not worth putting a compressor into.

- Is it worth repairing a twenty-year-old built-in?: Age alone does not settle it. Parts availability and the state of the cabinet do, and the serial number is what answers the first. Fans, gaskets, thermistors, closers and hinge hardware are generally still made for cabinets of that age, and a fan motor at $250–$600 on a sound box is money well spent.

- How much does it cost to replace a Sub-Zero compressor?: Compressor and sealed-system repair is one band here: $870–$2,460, parts and labour together, after the $80 visit that is credited toward it. Where a job lands inside that band depends on whether the failure contaminated the system, which side of the cabinet it is on, and what has to come out to reach it.

- What would make you tell me not to repair it?: A cracked or delaminated liner, a frame corroded through where it meets the floor, water damage in the base, or a part that is genuinely no longer made for that serial. You get that verdict in writing with both figures beside each other, and the visit has already been paid for either way.

How you get the answer

## One visit, both figures

A flat $80 covers the visit and the diagnosis. It is credited toward the repair if you go ahead with the work.

You get a written estimate before any part is ordered or any labour is billed. Nothing proceeds without your approval. Where the cabinet makes replacement the better call,
that is what the estimate says, with the replacement figure written beside the
repair figure rather than instead of it.

Labour is warranted for 90 days and parts for 365 days from the date of the repair. Genuine OEM parts throughout.

We service Sub-Zero refrigeration only, as an independent shop.
We do not service heating or air conditioning. No furnaces, no heat pumps, no air handlers, no mini-splits and no ductwork. That is a separate trade with its own licensing, and a call about a house that will not cool belongs with an HVAC contractor rather than with us.

The panel front had stopped sitting flush and the column was working harder for it. He reset the hinge shims, adjusted the closer and the seal now pulls in evenly along its whole length.

Door alarm sounded most evenings with the door properly shut. The magnet strip had rolled at one corner, which he showed me by sliding paper along the seal until it pulled free.

The bin was filling at half the speed it used to. He measured pressure at the valve, found it weak, and traced that to a supply line kinked behind the cabinet the last time it was pushed back in.
